How affirmations can help you live the life you love

Recently you may have heard of lots of people using “affirmations” in their every day lives. Just looking on Instagram or Facebook, your feed may be swarmed with positive quotations and feel-good pictures. So, do affirmations really work and should you use them?

What is an affirmation?

An affirmation is basically anything you think or say. We normally think and speak to ourselves in quite a negative way and this can actually create negative experiences for us. They help us to retrain our thinking and speaking, moving it from the negative to the positive, to help us live the best lives possible.

Personally, I have started using affirmations frequently over the past few years and find much comfort in them. What I have found is that affirmations open new doors. They signal to your brain that you are ready to change. Steve often speaks in his sessions about the subconscious mind and, by using affirmations, you’re saying to your subconscious that you are showing up and taking responsibility for your life.

Negative thoughts are affirmations too

Every complaint, every negative thought you have, all these are affirmations of things you don’t want in your lives. As Steve often explains, the subconscious doesn’t listen to your thoughts like you think it should – for example, when you say to yourself “I don’t want to put on weight”, your subconscious ignores the “don’t” and you simply attract more weight into your life. How tricky is that?! That’s why using affirmations in the right way can help you attract the things you wish for and desire. Until you change the way you think and the way you speak, you’ll probably find yourself stuck in a rut!

Scientific research into affirmations

In a study published in the journal “Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin”, researchers found that people in lower positions of power may perform better by using affirmations to help them.

Researchers discovered this by conducting 3 role-playing experiments. The study discovered that the people in the role-plays that were assigned high-power roles (e.g. recruiters or salespeople) tended to succeed over their lower-power contemporaries who had been assigned roles like job candidates and consumers.

The last experiment had a twist. Before the experiment, half the participants were asked to write for 5 minutes about their most important negotiating skill. The other half had to write out their least important negotiating skill. The research showed that the lower-power participants who wrote highly positive affirmations about themselves performed significantly better in negotiating than the others. In other words, the affirmations helped the lower-power participants step into their power and perform successfully!

Affirmations for every day

So, let’s wake up and consciously create the things we want in our lives. Let’s step into our power and tell our subconscious minds that we’re ready to create the best lives imaginable.

It is such a simple exercise that anyone can do. Below are some affirmations that can help you in different areas of your life. Practise them on a daily basis and check yourself when you see a negative thought creeping in. Change it into a positive! You’ll soon see the positive changes in your health, relationships, finances and any area of your life that you are focusing on.

  • I truly and completely love myself.
  • I am healthy and happy.
  • All is well in my world.
  • I am confident and powerful.
  • Every decision I make is the right one for me.
  • Today is going to be a fantastic day.
  • My income is constantly increasing.
  • I am abundant in all areas of my life.
  • I am pain free.

But do affirmations really work?

Some people think that affirmations don’t work and, guess what? That’s an affirmation in itself! If people speak the affirmations but then follow it up with a thought like “This is totally pointless and stupid. It will never work!”, which emotion do you think will win: the positive or the negative? Most definitely the negative. So, have an open mind and think positively about using affirmations. You will be amazed at the results.
